Original Interships

The Trempealeau County Health Care Center is eager to assist students in gaining the education and clinical experience needed to pursue a career as a psychologist, social worker or professional counselor.

The Trempealeau County Health Care Center provides unique training experiences for students along with an opportunity to work with an array of mental health, geriatric and intellectual issues. Within each level of training we offer clinical experience, supervision, consultation services and exposure to working as a member of an intensive interdisciplinary team.

Psychology: Doctoral

This practicum provides experience performing diagnostic interviewing, suicide risk assessments, Alcohol & Other Drug Assessments as well as administration and interpretation of psychological testing (personality, intelligence, memory, projectives). Some of the more frequently used tests include MMPI-2, MCMI-III, BDI – II, SCL-90-R, WAIS-IV,WMS-IV, Peabody, KBIT – 2, and WRAT.

Experience with individual and group therapy is offered. (e.g. Some of the groups include Anger Management, Emotion Regulation, Crisis Planning and Relapse Prevention, Chemical Dependency, Healthy Eating, Relaxation Training, and Relationships/Life Skills). Students also have the ability to customize their experience based on their interest.

Benefits

While there is a significant amount of travel from the Twin Cities (approx. 2 hrs.), there has consistently been a competitive population of students who seek out the quality training at TCHCC. A few fringe benefits include lodging, meal, and gas stipend.

Practicum length preferred is nine months and may be flexible. TCHCC requires a minimum 16 hours per week within the hours of operation from 8-4:00 Monday through Friday. Two consecutive eight hour days is highly recommended.

Professional Counseling /Social Work: Masters

This internship/practicum provides students with the opportunity to utilize their classroom instructed model to provide individual and group psychotherapy to residents, with varying MH & CD diagnosis. Training in suicide risk will occur. The opportunity to administer assessment may be available.

The internship/practicum allows for a variety of experiences working with a diverse population. Students will have the opportunity to practice individual and group psychotherapy in a supportive interdisciplinary treatment environment. The internship can be tailored to each student’s specific needs or area of emphasis and interest.

Intern/practicum length preferred is nine months but may be flexible. TCHCC requires a minimum 16 hours per week for internships with the hours of operation from 8-4:00 Monday through Friday. Location of the internship could be in our Social Services or Psychology departments at various locations determined by your supervisor.

Social Work: Bachelors

This internship provides in-depth clinical knowledge and skills that enable a student to deliver comprehensive social services in either the clinical long-term care treatment or community setting. It provides the rich experiences needed to create a competent social worker. You will gain knowledge regarding a variety of illnesses including mental health and chemical dependency. Knowledge gained in our long-term nursing facility is on Alzheimer’s, dementia, and family dynamics.

Duration of internship is flexible, and we do have the flexibility to fulfill school requirements. TCHCC requires a minimum of 16 hours per week for internships with the hours of operation from 8-4:00 Monday through Friday. Location of the internship would be in our Social Services department at various locations determined by your supervisor.
